The warfare, as well as the burning of several quarters of the city (principally Turkish, but also Greek) and consecutive massacres made several thousands of victims, Turkish civilians, Greek troops and Greek civilians, according to converging estimates. ==Background== Aydın was a central town of the fertile Menderes River (Meander) valley in western Turkey.
